ABB Inc., in Auburn Hills, MI is seeking a Senior Electronic Motor Manufacturing Development Engineer / Technologist to join our Robotics and Motion team, the first major global industrial robotics manufacturer to produce robots in the United States. Tasks:

As an electric motor system engineer at ABB, you will contribute in several key aspects of electric powertrain development processes for both internal and external customers. You are expected to have relevant experience and hence able to analyze advanced traction motor systems for Electric Vehicle application. The scope may include electric machine manufacturing design optimization, advanced motor manufacturing process development, or motor controller manufacturing development.

This person will be responsible for advancing process understanding and leading process improvement efforts related to aspects of electric powertrain development manufacturing. This position will work closely in cross-functional teams including equipment/machine engineering, cell design engineering, external vendors and technology partners to realize program goals from initial concept to production introduction. The specific activities include, but not limited to, technical support of manual and semi-automated equipment, process studies, process capability evaluations on key parameters, determination of throughput capability, and insuring proper documentation of work instructions. Ideal candidate is a self-starter, with extensive experience in electric motor manufacturing technology with a focus on manufacturing process development.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Specification, design and analysis of manufacturing systems of advanced traction motors and controllers for specific vehicle performance targets.

* Through modeling and simulation, perform process analysis of vehicle manufacturing subsystems.

* Develop testing plans to validate motors quality during manufacturing.

* Lead a team of engineers to create manufacturing system motor assembly drawings and release to manufacturing.

* Support manufacturing analysis of motor systems including Noise, Vibration, and Harshness - NVH.

* Lead motor manufacturing development including process selection and process evaluation.

* Support powertrain system integration and vehicle control integration at ABB and external customers.

* Minimal 10% (1-2 days per month) off site for customer meetings, field investigation and installation support.

Essential Functions:

* Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

* Conduct research on robotic technology to create new robotic systems or system capabilities

* Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of robotic mechanisms, components, or systems, like collaborative, coordinated multiple robots, reconfigurable robots, or man-machine interactions

* Analyze evaluate robotic systems or prototypes. Design automated robotic systems to increase production volume or precision in high-throughput operations, like flexible part complexity analysis or sorting, moving, or stacking production materials. Design robotic systems utilizing advanced sensing, collaborative robotic platforms, and machine vision.

* Accountable for the successful completion of engineering projects.

* Lead customer/contractor meetings and resolve customer/engineering issues

* Call and run Design Reviews at all levels; Proposal, Standards, Project, etc.

* Develop new and innovative technical solutions to minimize costs while maintaining reliability

* Provide industry specific application knowledge and direction

* Develop requirement and design specifications

* Develop tools and integration strategies to increase effectiveness and lower cost

* Attend at least one (1) technology related conferences per year

* Assist in developing ABB Systems Engineering specifications for projects

Requirements:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

* High School Diploma or GED AND 9 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation OR

* Associate's Degree AND 7 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation OR

* Bachelor's Degree AND 5 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation.

Alternatively, this position may be hired at a Senior Level

* High School Diploma or GED AND 12 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation OR

* Associate's Degree AND 10 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation OR

* Bachelor's Degree AND 8 years of experience in development, design, or engineering, mechanical, electrical, design, robotics, or automation.

Preferred Qualifications

* Knowledgeable in electric vehicle architecture.

* Extensive experience in power electronics hardware and motor control system manufacturing.

* Solid understanding of various types of electric machines and their manufacture.

* Experience in the manufacturing of high power density permanent-magnet motors and induction motors.

* Knowledgeable in state-of-the-art manufacturing methods of electric machines.

* Working knowledge of quality system as applied product development and manufacturing including: SPC, ISO, 6Sigma, design of experiments and statistical analysis

* Experience in contributing to manufacturing development programs with internal engineering groups and external technology development partners

* Knowledge, and awareness in Powertrain Assembly.

* Functional knowledge of Robotics and/or Automation

* Functional experience working with engineering design projects and machine startup

* Functional experience with Auto-CAD / SolidWorks.

* Torque control applications

* Conveyor transport
